How to Get Out of A Creative Slump

Lately, I’ve been feeling my creativity waning. Like no ideas coming and no energy at the same time. I was dragging mentally and physically… something wasn’t right So I took a look at my life. What was I doing with my days? I looked at my journal, my screen time, my non-screen time, and my routines. And there were some big challenges I uncovered.

My energy wasn’t where it needed to be because I got caught up in energy saving mode. (I have a chronic illness) The next challenge I uncovered was in my morning routine. I wasn’t keeping to my routine at all! Final challenge was located in my screen time. I was spending a lot of time on FB and IG… not creating simply consuming. So I’m going to share with you what I’m doing to get out of the creative slump and get the creativity mojo running again.

1) I’m going to reset and recommit to both my morning routines and my evening routines. My morning routine consists of gratitude journaling and brain dump, setting priorities for the day.  Then I get going to make breakfast and tea. This is followed by at least 10 mins of meditation and journaling again. Lastly I make my bed. Then I get to work. This is what it’s supposed to be and has been for a few years now. I’m going to ease back into it so my mind won’t rebel.

2) Next is to make my afternoon walks longer. For the longest time they were barely 1/2 a mile. I’m extending it about 12 blocks over the next week and moving my body more.

3) Focus on my new affirmations and use them as reminders:

  1. Everyday in every way I am getting better and better
  2. Energy is replenishable. The more I use the more I get back
  3. I enjoy my creativity and it’s my friend
  4. Creativity is replenishable. The more I use the more I get back.

4) Finally give myself some grace. You see, I’ve been really hard on myself for not creating as much as usual. Thing is…shame and judgment are the opposite of what creativity needs to thrive. Creativity needs a spacious judgment free zone in order to do its thing.

To recap I noticed my creativity and energy began to float away so I reassessed different areas of my life and created a plan of action to get back in the grove again (& so far it’s working)! That plan consists of:

  • reset and recommiting to my routines
  • make my afternoon walks longer
  • use my new affirmations as constant reminders
  • give myself some grace so creativity can flow

So what about you? What would you do in a creative slump? Any tips to share? Share in the coments and let us know.

Until next time
